This guide to testing a Lucas dynamo is based upon my experiences with my Matchless G3LS, although the same principles should apply to other Matchless and AJS bikes (and indeed to other bikes and cars of the same era which also use the Lucas dynamo charging system).

Post-WW2, the company phased out its ohc models, the pushrod motor developed for their touring models being capable of greater development.
So great was that potential that the range was headed by the superb 38 bhp ‘Venom’ single of the ‘sixties. Perhaps surprisingly, the ‘Venom’ came to be put in the shade by the final development of the firm, their swansong, the ‘Thruxton’.

It was important for eligibility in endurance races such as the Thruxton that competing motorcycles were genuine production machines but, although the Velocette Thruxton was sold in a road-going version, it was really targeted at the racing fraternity. There is, probably, no better Thruxton available on the market today.

The only positive way you can do this is by reference to the original factory records, which are not in the public domain. However there are a few things you need to be aware of; Velocette built engines and frames separately, kept them in the stores and eventually built them into a machine.
Therefore there is no direct or logical relationship between engine and frame numbers. This causes problems particularly towards the end of the year where the last frame number I can find does not necessarily belonging to the last engine number of that year. In compiling this information I took the latest frame number I could find for the year concerned.
